Walking
The Clwydian Range AONB rises directly behind the town. Moel Famau (554m) is the main summit — reachable from the Bwlch Penbarra car park (3 miles return, 1.5 hours) or from the town on foot (9 miles return, full half-day). The ridge gives exceptional views across the Vale of Clwyd and, on clear days, to Snowdonia.
Ruthin Castle
The castle is now a 4-star hotel. Non-residents can eat in the restaurant, book the medieval banquets (Friday and Saturday evenings, advance booking essential), and walk in the grounds by arrangement. The castle itself dates from 1277.
Day Trips
Llangollen (25 miles, 40 minutes) is the best day trip — Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, Castell Dinas Bran, and Valle Crucis Abbey. Denbigh Castle (10 miles, 25 minutes) is a good shorter trip. Chester (25 miles, 40 minutes) is an excellent full day from a Ruthin base.
